Behind The Scenes
Hi everybody! Thanks for having me back in your inboxes. I am really excited about this particular newsletter because I finally have some real news for you guys!
STAR EATERS NEWS
Editing is officially underway. My editor, (the wildly talented Mawce Hanlin) is working diligently on cleaning up the draft of The Stars Want Blood. This has been an interesting experience for me! It’s my first time working with an editor, and I am already blown away. They’re doing an incredible job and making TWSB so much better, but I’m also learning so much!? Apparently, I do not understand grammar… whoops. Hanlin has been kind enough to also make a separate document for me where they go more into depth explaining why they’re making the changes that they are, and that’s been super helpful for me. So, for anybody who has seen snippets of Stars or has beta read the first book, just wait until you see the final copy. I am blown away by how much better Hanlin is shaping it out to be!
March is cover month!! I don’t know the date exactly, but the artist I’ve commissioned for the cover of The Stars Wants Blood will be starting on it this month, meaning that I should have it at some point in April! And don’t worry, you’ll all get a sneak preview of it before I post it anywhere online!
I am anticipating ARCs being ready sometime in April! Like the cover, you will all get exclusive access to signing up before I release it into the wild. There will be more to come on this in April, so keep an eye out!
Book two is also still in progress! The draft is currently sitting at about 55k, which means I’m about ⅓ of the way through it! I am hoping to have it beta ready by the fall.
I also have the official release date picked out! Stars will be out in the world on:
June 19th, 2024
Could the first book in the Star Eaters series really be anything other than a Gemini? And it’s a nice little birthday present for me, its Gemini author, in my humble opinion. I can welcome my 29th year of existence by neurotically staring at the KDP portal trying not to puke or pass out!
If you’d like, you can pre-order the book here, and you can add it to your shelf on GoodReads here! I am working on figuring out how I’d like to do signed paperback pre-orders, so I will send out an announcement about that once I get everything organized.
OTHER PROJECTS
At virtually all times, I am working on 5648415613165461 different projects. It’s a problem. Because it’s getting so out of control, I’ve developed a sort of schedule for working on my projects. This schedule is actually sort of working! I am finally beginning to see some progress with my other projects. Here’s some quick info on each of them:
BULL RIDERS WIP This one is…chugging along. Draft one is currently sitting at about 28k. I have everything plotted out but something about this particular project is tripping me up. I will figure that out at some point, maybe.
QUANTUM WIP This is the newest project of mine, inspired by my read of Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter. It’s a contemporary romance piece with some hint of sci-fi. I haven’t figured out much about it yet, but it’s been my current hyperfixation. Quantum mechanics is cool and I am going to get you all to agree with me on that!!
SIRENS WIP This is a project that I’ve been playing around with for a few months now, inspired by my first ever D&D campaign. It follows the story of Rydell, a mage haunted by something dark and devastating. It’s a high fantasy piece and I have just broken 10k in my draft zero! Next month, I am planning on cracking down and really trying to figure out the plot. It will be time for lore-building (my beloved) and outlining (my behated.)
BEHIND THE SCENES
I thought that it might be fun to dive into what I do outside of writing—what Morgan Lawson’s life actually looks like.
So, what do I do when I’m not writing?
I’ve been reading a lot. My goal for 2024 is to read one book a week, or as close to that as I can manage. My current standouts right now include:
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. This was absolutely BRILLIANT and I devoured it in about eight hours, which is really impressive for me. I am not joking when I said that I physically could not put this down. If you’ve ever thought about what the road not taken might look like, or you like sci-fi with a hint of romance, then this book is absolutely for you. I also read Recursion and Upgrade by the same author. Both were also brilliant and captivating and I also recommend those two books.
Of Blood & Aether, Harbingers Book 1, by Harper Hawthorne. I beta read this book about a year ago and was obsessed with it instantly, and I was fortunate enough to be welcomed into Harbies Hel and got to watch as Harper made it even better. I just recently completed my ARC read of it and was blown away, even after a year of watching it all come together so closely. This book has set a new standard for romantasy and I firmly believe that Hawthorne is about to take the reading world by storm. My full review of this book can be found on GoodReads! It is also presently available for pre-order on Amazon.
What have I been listening to?
If you follow me on any of my social media, then you know that music is an integral part of my life. I have music on for about 70% of my day at minimum. My music taste is very eclectic—I did an experiment last year and have discovered that the only genres that I don’t like are Bro Country and most Avant-Garde. Everything else? Fair game—and as such, it’s been all over the place lately. But some of my favorite jams have been: CAN YOU SEE ME? by Rezz, Error 404 by N3URO, SIGNS by KAMAARA, Afterimage by Northlane, Vortexblade and Fireball by Marshmello and SVDDEN DEATH, Stone Walls by Three Tall Pines, I’m Going to Heaven by Amigo the Devil, Trump Card by Unhealthy While Unhinged, Kool-Aid by Bring Me The Horizon, Take Shape by Code Orange, and Wake Up by Gemini Syndrome.
Okay, anything else?
I work a lot, so unfortunately, not much else! I did recently start playing Baldur’s Gate 3 after many months of trying to resist temptation. I have no idea what’s going on and am currently lost trying to find Halsin but am having so much fun! I expect this game to become an obsession for me very quickly lol.
All right, I think that that’s everything! If you’ve made it this far, thanks for stopping by. Excited to have much more exciting news for you all very soon! <3
